To apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), fill out Form W-7, commonly known as the “Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.” The form is available on the IRS website or via a tax professional.

You must also include evidence proving your identification and foreign status when filing Form W-7. A foreign passport, a national identification card, and a consular report of birth abroad are all acceptable types of proof.

You can send the form and supporting evidence to the IRS in one of three ways:

  • Sending it to the address on the form
  • Taking it to an authorized IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) in person
  • Using an authorized IRS Acceptance Agent or Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) to submit it
  • Using the IRS e-file system to submit it

When the IRS receives your application, it will be reviewed and an ITIN will be issued if the application is approved. An ITIN application normally takes 7-10 weeks to process, however, it may take longer in some situations. It is crucial to note that the ITIN is solely used for federal tax purposes and does not allow you to work in the United States or qualify for Social Security payments.

Form W-7

Form W-7, commonly known as the “Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number,” is used by those who do not have a Social Security number yet require one for tax purposes. This form is frequently used by foreign nationals, resident and nonresident aliens, who are not qualified for a Social Security number but must submit a tax return or claim a refund in the United States.

Documentation proving an individual’s identity and foreign status must be submitted with Form W-7. Acceptable documents include a foreign passport, a national identification card, and a consular report of birth in another country. Once the form and papers are submitted, the IRS will assess the application and, if approved, will issue an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
