Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the product and billing.

Individuals, businesses, and other entities must file a tax return if their income meets certain thresholds. U.S. citizens, resident aliens, and certain nonresident aliens may be required to file based on income type, age, and filing status.

The standard deadline for filing an individual federal tax return (Form 1040) is April 15 each year. If the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is the next business day. You can request a six-month extension, but taxes owed must still be paid by April 15.

If you owe taxes and fail to file by the deadline, you may face late filing penalties and interest charges. The failure-to-file penalty is typically 5% of unpaid taxes per month, up to 25%. If you are due a refund, there is no penalty, but you must file within three years to claim it.

The IRS allows taxpayers to file electronically through IRS Free File, tax software (like TurboTax or H&R Block), or an authorized tax professional. E-filing is faster, more secure, and ensures quicker refunds if you choose direct deposit.

You can check your return or refund status using the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on the IRS website or via the IRS2Go mobile app. You’ll need your Social Security Number (SSN), filing status, and exact refund amount to check the status.

If you make an error after filing, you may need to submit Form 1040-X (Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return). Common corrections include income adjustments, filing status changes, or missing deductions. You typically have three years from the original filing date to amend your return.
